We took an ill-fated detour off of Highway 50 to hopefully find the ghost town known as Rawhide. The view was impressive as we drove, as the photo shows.

We never found the ghost town, but rather found a very large and very active mining operation where we thought the ghost town would be. Oh well.

What struck me about Nevada is that important linking roads are often not paved (a portion of this road was unpaved too). I suppose the cost is too great for the relatively little traffic they get, but it seems somewhat normal to take an upaved road to more or less common destinations.
